Not for the Dallas Mavericks supporters who felt deceived and wanted to express their disapproval of the organizational betrayal committed by trading Dončić, nor for Luka Dončić.
Perhaps because they don’t understand what they see when the Mavericks take the court each night, the devotion, emotion, and connection that so many fans demonstrated when they flocked to Dallas’ American Airlines Center were to Dončić and not the franchise.
Even in purple and gold, however, they were able to identify Dončić. They knew him, grew with him, and for the first time since that Saturday night in February, they were able to commemorate him, even if they were playing for the infamous Lakers and exiting that distant tunnel opposite the one opposite the Mavericks bench.
They acknowledged his brilliance, which was evident in the Lakers’ 112-97 victory as he finished with 45 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. It demonstrated why the Lakers believe they have a realistic chance to play into June for the first time in a long time and why the Mavericks supporters never wanted him to leave.
Dončić is not even close to moving on from this, and if the strange situation is any indicator, it will likely take Mavericks supporters even longer. Playing for this prestigious team could be a cathartic outlet for Dončić.
