CONSTANTIA, N.Y. — The man slain by an Oswego County Sheriff’s Deputy on March 21 was identified by New York State Attorney General Letitia James.
Miles Dignean was recognized as the dead by the Attorney General’s Office. He was shot in a house in the Town of Constantia located at 34 Cook Road.
Following a 911 request for a welfare check and to serve Dignean with an order of protection, Oswego County Deputies and the New York State Police arrived at the address at approximately noon on the afternoon of March 21.
During a “struggle,” Dignean struck a State Trooper in the head with a metal object, according to the Attorney General’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office. As a result, the trooper sustained a minor injury that necessitated their transfer to a hospital in Syracuse.
A deputy fired at Dignean as a result of the ongoing struggles. After being hit by the gunfire, he was sent to the hospital. At approximately 2:30 p.m. same day, he was declared deceased.
“The cops just killed my son” was written in red letters on a cardboard sign beside the road where the event occurred after he passed away.
In accordance with New York State law, the case is currently being evaluated by the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation. Every shooting in which a civilian is killed and a law enforcement officer is involved is investigated by the office.
