While many Democrats are still split over New York Senator Chuck Schumer’s leadership after recently joining with Republicans to prevent a government shutdown, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is still standing with Schumer.
Members of his party and his Democratic base have strongly criticized Schumer’s (D/NYC) choice. He said that for the government to shut down would enable President Donald Trump to carry out his harsh federal budget cutbacks. Schumer claimed that preserving the government would “minimize harm to the American people” prior to the vote.
During a housing event on Tuesday, March 18, Governor Hochul responded to questions from media and backed Schumer’s leadership.
“Senator Schumer has consistently delivered for New York State.” Governor Hochul stated, “We have been extremely fortunate to have a [person] in that extremely powerful position to be able to deliver.” Whether it’s CHIPS—I mean, Micron—bipartisan gun control legislation, or the Gateway Tunnel? Also, his name is on [that]. I therefore don’t want to lose that influence.
Schumer is also receiving backing from other prominent Democrats, such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Jeffries merely said, “Yes, I do,” in response to reporters’ questions about whether he supported Schumer’s leadership of the Senate.
Senator Schumer was planning to promote his new book, “Antisemitism in America: A Warning,” by embarking on a book tour. Due to resentment within his own party over his handling of the government financing measure, the senator postponed the travel, citing security concerns.
