According to his family on Thursday, Eddie Jordan, the gregarious Irish businessman whose team gave Michael Schumacher his Formula One debut in 1991, has away at the age of 76 from cancer at home in South Africa.
Jordan, who went on to become a television commentator, joined the ‘Piranha Club’ of grand prix racing in 1991 with his own Silverstone-based team and remained there until 2005, when financial difficulties forced a sale.
It now competes as Aston Martin after going through several name and ownership changes.
“EJ’s charisma, enthusiasm, and Irish charm were contagious wherever he went. In a statement, the family added, “Without him, we all have a huge hole missing.”
