According to President Donald Trump, he intends to welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to the White House to commemorate their five-year-old Super Bowl victory, which was impacted by COVID-19.
The Covid-19 pandemic that was sweeping the world prevented the Chiefs from properly celebrating their victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV in February 2020, including the traditional trip to the White House.
However, Trump claims that after five years, the team would be able to finally pose for photos at the White House.
“The Philadelphia Eagles, who won Super Bowl LIX in February, are someone I’m excited to have.” In an interview on Air Force One, Trump also stated, “And one other thing, we’re going to have the Kansas City Chiefs after that, because they missed their turn because of Covid.” Travis is the founder of the sports website Outkick. He did not specify when the visit will take place.
Along with the Eagles, the Chiefs would be the second club to join Trump in celebrating this year.
Following rumors on social media that the club would decline the customary visit, Philadelphia formally accepted an invitation to visit the White House earlier this month after defeating the Chiefs 40–22 in this year’s Super Bowl.
According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, the Eagles will come on April 28.
In 2018, when Trump was in his first term in office, Philadelphia chose not to join him in celebrating the win.
The move caused a flurry of condemnation from the president, who uninvited the entire Eagles team after falsely accusing them of kneeling during “The Star-Spangled Banner” that year and other acts of disrespecting the National Anthem.
In reference to the 2018 incident, Trump claimed that although the general manager, coaches, and a few players wanted to attend, the invitation was revoked because of the controversy. A few players expressed interest in attending. In addition, he recalled, “I also had the problem with the San Francisco basketball team. And I just said, just forget it.”
After winning the 2016–17 NBA championship, the Golden State Warriors declined to visit Trump in the White House the year before, and Trump likewise announced on social media that the invitation had been withdrawn.
“Well, we’ll give it some thought,” they said. The president informed Outkick, “You don’t have to think; you’re uninvited.”
